Steps and tanning ledges are among the easiest pool features to overpromise. A robot can clean the floor, climb walls and still leave a shallow shelf untouched. The deciding factors are physical: water depth, usable width, the transition onto the platform and the space the robot needs to move.
Assume manual touch-ups remain necessary unless the exact model supports your measured shelf. Investigate specific shallow-area models, but read their depth and geometry conditions. Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra and current-generation Aiper claims are conditional, not universal step-cleaning guarantees.

Compare the shortlist
Use these candidates to narrow the job and ownership routine. The notes below explain the tradeoffs; listing presence is not a guarantee of current Amazon availability.
| Candidate | Reason to investigate | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Beatbot AquaSense 2 Ultra | Documented conditional step/platform candidate | Manufacturer requires adequate width and depth above 1.31 feet |
| Current Aiper Scuba S1 | Shallow-area candidate to verify | Current page mentions 12-inch shallow cleaning; older models differ |
| Dolphin Nautilus EON 120D | Catalog ledge-cleaning candidate | Manufacturer describes ledges as shallow as eight inches; verify exact manual |
| Manual brush or compatible handheld | Touch-up option | Often the practical answer for inaccessible shallow zones |
Measure the ledge before comparing robots
Measure the water depth above the shelf, not just the drop from shelf to main floor. Also measure usable width, the step riser and any tight corners. A wide shallow sun shelf can be harder for a robot than a narrow but deeper bench because the machine needs sufficient water over its working parts.
Take a photograph from above and another showing the transition. Include any umbrella sleeve, drain or furniture position that reduces travel space. Send those details to the manufacturer when asking about compatibility. 'It has a tanning ledge' is too vague to establish what the robot can do.
Read conditional promises literally
Beatbot's AquaSense 2 Ultra product page says steps need enough width for cleaning and more than 1.31 feet of water. That is roughly 15.7 inches, and it excludes many very shallow shelves. Do not turn a conditional platform claim into 'cleans all steps.'
The current S1 page mentions 12-inch shallow-area cleaning, but the catalog also includes older S1 units. Confirm the exact generation, supported geometry and manual. Maytronics describes the Nautilus EON 120d as reaching sun ledges as shallow as eight inches. That makes it a candidate for some shelves that are too shallow for other models, but confirm the precise depth and geometry in the supplied manual before ordering.

Getting onto a shelf is not the whole task
A robot may reach a step once without systematically cleaning it. It also needs to turn, avoid becoming stranded and return safely to deeper water. Look for an actual supported cleaning routine rather than a dramatic photograph of a machine positioned on a platform.
During evaluation, observe whether the robot crosses the transition, covers the usable shelf and leaves it without repeated intervention. Record depth and mode. Do not place a cleaner in water shallower than its permitted operating depth simply to see whether it will work. Use the manufacturer-supported setup and seek advice when it does not behave as expected.
When a touch-up tool is the better purchase
If the main floor and walls are the big weekly chore, a compatible robot plus a short manual shelf brush may be a sensible setup. Paying a large premium to chase one inaccessible shallow area can be disappointing if the depth requirement still rules it out.
A compatible handheld cleaner can address localized debris, while a brush can move loose material into a zone the main robot reaches. Follow the pool surface and tool instructions. Decide what remaining work you can accept before purchasing. The goal is less effort overall, not a promise that every physical feature can be automated.
A shelf with 8 inches of water is not made compatible with a model requiring more than 15 inches simply because the shelf is wide. A deeper platform can qualify on depth yet fail on turning space. Both dimensions need to work.

I am choosing my first cleaner
Start with the buying guide to match cleaning zones, pool geometry and your maintenance routine. Use this article’s shortlist only after those requirements are clear.
I already own a cleaner but one chore remains
Identify the missed zone or debris type. Check compatible filters and the manual before replacing the entire cleaner. For a replacement decision, compare repair and replacement costs.
I have narrowed it to two models

Common questions
Will a wall-climbing robot clean steps?
Not necessarily. Wall climbing does not establish step or shallow-platform coverage.
Can I put the robot directly on a ledge?
Only if the manual permits that setup and the depth and geometry meet its requirements.
Is an AI cleaner guaranteed to clean a tanning shelf?
No. Navigation features do not remove physical depth, size and movement limits.
